Thinking about becoming self-employed? Do it!
You bump into some funny people sometimes, don’t you? Well…anyway, I do. Like the trade show magician I met the other week. Now, he had some stories…
What I liked about Gerald was his attitude: he was easy going, fun and yet he wore a suit and looked like he probably worked in finance. I met him in the supermarket, after he bumped into me and left me with a sore hip. Although he couldn’t make the lump on it go away, he was good enough to talk to me for a while about his job, and how much he loved being self-employed too. Here’s what Gerald came out with.
…one would be keeping all your receipts for your year end accounts so you can claim money back.
1) You’re never too old to become self-employed. Well, unless you’re elderly and infirm and you can’t leave the house. But even then you could do some freelance writing or something like that. The point is, where there’s a will there’s a way. And Gerald would know – he had only in the last year become self-employed!
2) The first couple of years aren’t going to be as great as you think. Probably. The bummer, of course, is that you’ll be paying your National Insurance tax and the like during this time. It’s a requirement, you know. But then again, as soon as you start getting jobs – whatever that may involve – things start to work out in your favour. Especially if you’re working from home and not paying any business rates, yahoo!
3) There are loads of ways to save on money: one would be keeping all your receipts for your year end accounts so you can claim money back. Another would be buying second-hand equipment from a car-boot sale instead of online. After all, if you do that and your amazing business ideas doesn’t work out then you haven’t lost as much money as you otherwise would have!
